Children with no previous exposure to Jewish beliefs and rituals will find the explanations here both clear and enticing, respectful of different religious traditions. Speaking in friendly, measured tones, Kimmel also accommodates Jewish readers from a variety of backgrounds, from Reform to Orthodox. He emphasizes the personal signficance of the ceremony by interpolating short first-person accounts of different men's and boys' bar mitvahs?not all of these are joyous, but each is powerful and distinct (an octagenarian describes how he had a second bar mitvah 67 years after his first; another man recounts the dramatic events of his 13th birthday in 1943, spent with Jewish partisans in the forests of Poland; a third recalls that his bar mitzvah was "vulgar, crass, thoroughly unspiritual"?"and yet... something happened in spite of all that"). From School Library Journal Grade 6-8?Certainly, this is a book for every pre-bar mitzvah boy to read, but it is also a book for anyone who wants to learn about the beliefs, philosophies, and history of the religion. Kimmel describes the reason for the coming-of-age ceremony; what happens before and during it; and its origins and transformations throughout Jewish history. The author, in his informal, warm, conversational style, clarifies some esoteric facts about the sacred books of the Jews, Christians, and Muslims and looks at the similarities and differences in the three religions. Folklorist that he is, he has incorporated anecdotal material (including a poignant account by his father), rabbinic stories, and folktales into the narrative. Weihs's stylized, full-and half-page black-and-white scratchboard illustrations capture individuals and many of the traditional symbols and ritual objects associated with the ceremony. This is a lively and comprehensive treatment which deals thoroughly with bar mitzvah but not with the history or philosophical ramifications of Torah and prayer, nor with the ceremony's relationship to the ancient Temple service. How appropriate it is, then, that in his entertaining memoir he eschews "heavy drama" and "tell-all" confessions for a head-spinning volley of anecdotes and asides. Some of them are touching, as when he tells of arranging for David Dubinsky to call King's elderly father, who "revered" the union leader. Most are humorous, often hilarious, like the one about his tomato sauce cook-off challenge to Frank Sinatra, which ended up being judged by Louie the Light, Willie the Nose and Morey the Mouth. The parade of celebrities here seems endless-Marlon Brando, Harry Truman, Dean Martin (portrayed both in his youth and as a tragic old man), John Wayne, Judy Garland, Robert and Ted Kennedy, Jack Benny and on and on. Born Irwin Alan Kniberg to Russian immigrants in 1927, King honed his storytelling craft on the street corners of his boyhood Brooklyn neighborhood. (June) Library Journal Consisting of one long Alan King stand-up routine filled with all his stories and schtick, this memoir will delight those who like King's comedy. Those looking for the usual revealing celebrity autobiography will be disappointed, however. King says upfront, "This is not going to be a tell-all book. My few dark secrets I'm taking to my grave." He does offer up a fairly candid chronological reporting of his life from his humble beginnings as Irwin Alan Kniberg, son of Russian immigrants. He traces his successes from the early ones on the Borscht Belt to his film roles (Memories of Me, Casino) to his Broadway production stints (Lion in Winter, Dinner at Eight). King tells great name-dropping Hollywood stories, some old, some new, and there's warmth here, especially as he talks about his 49-year marriage. Still, there is nothing exceptional in these pages. They produce the prototypical showbiz autobiography: not a lot of depth, but high and wide with firsthand theatrical anecdotes. As advertised, the names do, indeed, drop. In a storm, a blizzard, a hurricane, a tornado the names appear. Famed political and sports figures take their bows, but mainly, perforce, the leading characters in King's yarns are comrades in grease paint. The original angry young comedian, now in his seventh decade, appears to have introduced Martin to Lewis, pushed Lena Horne to her comeback, bucked up Garland when she needed it, become Sinatra's pal and worked Siegel and the Mob in....
