Doll Mark Clues - First Edition - ANTIQUE DOLLS DICTIONARY 1967-72 Asking Prices - VOLUME 1 Ralph A. SHEA 1972 1101010762 281 pages, black and white drawings throughout. The author's late wife, Mae Veronica Shea, left her notes on the dolls in her collection that form the basis of this volume She not only noted the mark carefully, but described them and sought their origin. Her assistants did research through old business directories and magazines which turned out to be very important. Equally important was a study of comparative doll features and the individual characteristic differences of the dolls of different makers, a study that seemed to her would result in a yardstick for the identifying of the NUMBERLESS UNMARKED dolls. From the foreward: "An antique doll carries an aura of nostalgia, a brief contact with the past, an image of a little girl and her doll, Doll collectors pass over this bridge and then look back to discover the how, the who, the where, and the when; they WANT to get beneath the surface. That is where this book comes in, for it tries to help in the IDENTIFICATION OF DOLLS, MARKS on dolls should do this, but problems involving faint or blurred impressions, abbreviated marks intended for filing purposes only, or incomplete marks made in the hurry of a busy day can make identification difficult. IF YOU HAVE ANY CLEAR PART OF THE MARK, YOU MAY BE ABLE TO KNOW THE REMAINDER! A reading (in this book) of the doll's description and a comparison with YOURS will confirm a number of facts: 1). The entire mark. 2).The maker of the head and her term of business. 3.) the maker of the body and HIS term of business (if he were different from the maker of the head), 4.) the year that the doll was registered, and 5.) of course the approximate price in the 1962-72 marketplace. The book is in clear and unmarked condition, and will prove especially useful if you've been looking for that RARE doll you have in YOUR collection that you can't find a name for!
