Che!: Latin America's Legendary Guerilla Leader Neimark, Anne E. 1989 10013679 Grade 7-12-- A fictionalized biography which is both informative and entertaining. Neimark begins with Guevara's childhood years in Argentina and relates a dramatized episode in which 11-year-old Guevara, tormented by classmates for his asthma, eats chalk and drinks ink to show his courage. His lifelong battle with asthma is a constant theme throughout the book and obviously affected his life profoundly. When, as a young adult, he becomes involved in the politics of many Latin American countries, the names of the countries, their leaders, and major revolutionary groups may prove a bit confusing for students with no background in the subject; but Neimark's style is clear enough and the level of reading easy enough that most readers should be able to follow. The dramatic scenes and dialogue invented by Neimark help create a very readable adventure while her attention to fact and detail provide insight into Guevara's character and motives as well as those years of struggle in Latin America. Her portrayal of Guevara is generally sympathetic, but at the end she describes his mission as "basically commendable but his methods open to disavowel and condemnation." This will be useful for students where Latin America is studied or where biographies are required reading. Traces the life of the Latin American revolutionary and guerrilla fighter, from his days as a student to his death in Bolivia.
