CHINESE ODYSSEY: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF A CHINESE DISSIDENT Thurston, Anne F. 1991 10078 ABOUT THE BOOK Chinese Odyssey: The Life and Times of a Chinese Dissident FROM THE CRITICS Library Journal Through his career in school, the army, the work group, and the university, Ni Yuxian repeatedly challenged those in authority and announced his views in speeches, letters to Mao Zedong, books, and large posters. Labelled a reactionary and a counterrevolutionary, Ni was expelled from his posts and imprisoned under horrid conditions. Trapped in China, he got to the United States in 1986 to continue his organizing efforts with Chinese students. Thurston uses interviews with Ni and his family as the main sources for this highly readable account. Like Nien Chang's Life and Death in Shanghai ) and Liu Binyan's A Higher Kind of Loyalty , Ni's biography shows the intrusion of the Communist party in Chinese lives, and the high costs of dissenting.
