      1 DOWNTOWN (A Novel)
      Siddons, Anne Rivers
1994 12060  Her latest novel exhibits Siddons's ( Hill Towns ) strengths and weaknesses in equal measure and may leave her fans underwhelmed, disappointed in her uninspired and often pretentious story line. The background, Atlanta in the heady '60s, is well done, but Siddons's penchant for excessive prose and hokey nostalgia often gets out of hand. Maureen "Stormy" O'Donnell is a naive young woman from a working-class Irish-Catholic family who moves to Atlanta in the mid-'60s to write for a local magazine. (Her ease in getting the job and her overjoyed welcome by her new colleagues is the stuff of fairy tales.)

She's romanced by socially prominent, old-money swain Brad Hunt but has conflicting feelings about crusading photojournalist Luke Geary . During the course of the narrative, Stormy tackles Atlanta high society, triumphs over a bigoted lieutenant governor and becomes involved in the civil rights movement--and with one of its charismatic stars, John Howard. All this is rendered with a cloying, wide-eyed enthusiasm that hobbles Siddons's attempts to explore the South's prejudice and racism. Her language, which in past books has sometimes teetered toward the overblown, now positively gushes. Atlanta has "a sliver of Brigadoon through its heart," and Brad is so handsome Stormy "almost laughed aloud." Still, readers may welcome Siddons's attempt to grapple with moral and social issues. 300,000 first printing; $325,000 ad/promo; Literary Guild main selection; first serial to Cosmopolitan; audio rights to Harper Audio; author tour . Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Library Journal Echoes of Pat Conroy and Tennessee Williams can be heard in half a dozen apocalyptic scenes, keeping us flipping through the last 200 pages of this hefty chronicle of Atlanta in the Sixties. The narrative is slow to warm up, as protagonist Maureen "Smoky" O'Donnell emerges from the Savannah docks to write for Atlanta's award-winning Downtown magazine. Mentored by the charismatic editor-in-chief, Smoky gets awards for covering the city's war on poverty. As the novel gains momentum, she dumps wealthy Brad to find adventure with Freedom Summer veteran Lucas-only to lose him to the war in Vietnam. Siddons (Hill Towns, HarperCollins, 1993, and other very popular novels), one of the first senior editors of Atlanta magazine, has drawn on memory to create a satisfying historical romance spiced with wry humor. -  Harpercollins 0-06-017934-1 / 9780060179342

      2 FAULT LINES
      Siddons, Anne Rivers
1995 43467 From the Publisher Years of caring for her needy family have left Merritt Fowler exhausted and confused, uncertain of who she is or what she wants. When a family argument sends her lovely, fragile daughter, Glynn, running from her Atlanta home to her Aunt Laura in Hollywood, Merritt is compelled to follow. On impulse, the trio takes off in Laura's red Mustang convertible, barreling up the coast to the lush wilderness outside San Francisco -- earthquake country. There, amid the beauty and protection of the mountains, mother, daughter, and sister will struggle to see if the widening fissures between them can be healed, as they search for the bedrock of strength and courage that can save them and their family. BookList Like Robert Waller's "Bridges of Madison County" (1992) and Anne Tyler's "Ladder of Years" , Siddons' new novel tells of a self-sacrificing housewife who is tempted to walk away from her old life. It's apparent from the get go, though, that Siddons is working more along the lines of Waller's melodrama than Tyler's wry sendup. Merritt Fowler is exhausted from caring for her elderly mother-in-law, who's suffering from Alzheimer's disease. When a nasty argument compels her fragile 16-year-old daughter, Glynn, to seek refuge with Merritt's glamorous sister in California, Merritt follows, leaving her workaholic husband behind. The three women soon decide to take a trip to the Santa Cruz Mountains for a little R and R. In a remote lodge in the redwoods, Merritt meets and falls for an amateur seismologist, and Glynn is wooed by a Warren Beattylike director. Then an earthquake hits, and as the three women make the long, arduous trek to safety, they reevaluate their lives and goals. There's enough Sturm und Drang in this one to register 8.0 on the Richter scale, and Siddons pumps up every scene with overly lush prose and strangled dialogue: "`Whenever you see redwoods in "National Geographic", or fog, or watch Shamu on TV, you'll be seeing me.'" (Did he say Shamu?) With a red-hot theme, Hollywood glam, a natural disaster, anorexia--everything, in fact, but the kitchen sink--Siddons can't miss. Read it and weep. Annotation Deeply moving and masterfully imagined, Siddons presents readers with a novel that gets to the heart of the confusing power of love and family in Fault Lines. Merritt Fowler is a natural caregiver, but after years of giving, she no longer knows who she is or what is important to her. Setting out on a wild adventure to the Santa Cruz mountains, Merritt searches for the bedrock of strength and courage that can save her.
