BIRD DOGS CAN'T FLY Auch, Mary Jane Jane 1993 41350 For Preschool through Grade 1. 1-Blue is a bird dog who hates hunting and dreads having to retrieve the fallen prey for his master. When his owner shoots at a flock of geese, the dog finds Goose alive, but unable to fly. Befriending the wounded creature, he offers to help her walk to South, a place with "`warm breezes, sparkling water, and lots to eat.'" But South proves to be farther away than they realize, and the two struggle through snow and unfamiliar territory, with Goose almost ending up as a family's Christmas dinner. Finally, they reach their destination, but shortly thereafter, when spring approaches, Goose wants to fly back North. Blue stays behind, sad and alone, but his feathered pal soon returns, and they are reunited. The strong theme of friendship resonates throughout this warm, comfortable story with its soft craypas illustrations. Generally, Auch is true to the tone she sets in the beginning of the tale, although there are a few places where attempts at humor seem out of place. Nevertheless, if readers can excuse these small lapses as well as the unscientific premise of natural enemies overcoming their instincts to stay together, the tale is sure to appeal as a story of true-blue friendship.- Nancy Menaldi-Scanlan, Wheeler School, Providence, RI BookList Because bird dog Blue hates hunting, he keeps his discovery of an injured goose to himself, returning after his master is asleep to nurture the creature and keep it company. When the bird decides to go South, Blue wants to go, too. But since he can't fly, will he be able to keep up with his feathered friend? Auch's unpretentious, painterly style serves as a good foil for the story's sweet sentimentality. Blue's visage clearly shows his canine sadness and delight, and the brightly colored details and bold backgrounds of the pictures aptly reflect the warmhearted feeling of the story. A tale of the ups and downs of friendship that will please the kindergarten set. Peeping Beauty (children) Auch, Mary Jane 1995 10016859 Ages 4-8. From School Library Journal PreSchool-Grade 2-- Poulette the hen longs to become a famous ballerina. While her companions gossip and scratch in the garden, she stretches her limbs and dances her heart out. When a fox in talent scout's clothing appears seeking a star for a new production entitled "Peeping Beauty," the other hens try to convince Poulette that it's a trick. However, the star-struck chick is unable to resist a pretty pink tutu and the promise of applause. During the performance, the fox finally reveals his true colors, as well as a mouth full of teeth, and Poulette must think on her feet to save the show--and her life. Both text and artwork convey the humor and drama of this tale. The language is lively and filled with witty phrases and ballet references. Using bright colors and just enough detail, Auch sets her cast of characters against a simple backdrop. Poulette, with her wistful expression and ballet-slipper clad drumsticks, manages to be both graceful and funny, while the fox comes across as just the slightest bit trustworthy. Scenes of the ballet are highlighted by bright pinks and purples, building the excitement of the finale. Moving beyond the traditional chicken-versus-fox scenario, Auch sends a positive message about an inspiring heroine who believes in her dreams and in herself.
