GLOBAL GOURMET: A MULTICULTURAL COOKBOOK Bart, Kathleen 2003 5645 School Library Journal Gr 7 Up-A glossy book of 60 recipes from a dozen areas (most are countries, but "Africa" and the "Caribbean" are also included). For each region, recipes are provided to create a complete meal, from a Chinese New Year celebration to an Italian Sunday dinner. Some cultural information is also given; for example, a recipe for baked plantains is accompanied by tidbits about Caribbean music and Carnival. While many of the dishes seem appetizing, they are probably best prepared by an experienced adult cook. Some of them include wine, liqueur, or obscure ingredients such as Scotch Bonnet peppers and mahlepi ("-available in some Greek import shops"). Cooking directions are sometimes sketchy-readers are told to cook onions over "medium heat" for 10 minutes "until translucent," which might result in browned for novices (especially since no mention is made of stirring). The Greek salad recipe calls for a can of olives but doesn't say to drain them. The bright pictures add color but not much else, as most of the figures look stiff and lifeless. Only a few recipes are vegetarian, and nutrition information is not included. Reverie Publishing Company, LLC 1-932485-09-0 / 9781932485097 Hardcover As New Cumberland, MD Price:
