With a picture from The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle is a mild ``w is for washing;'' the phrase ``x is in fox'' only lamely explains the picture from The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck, of the title character walking with a fox. The book lacks integrity as an alphabet book and works better as a sampler of the treats available in the original books. Ages 1-5.

Each letter is shown on a separate page, in both upper and lower case form, with a particular word to represent a word that begins with the letter.

The word is put in context on the following page. This allows the children to see how and where the word can be used in a story. In some cases, a child may recall hearing specific contextual sentences from the original Beatrix Potter texts. Using such easily remembered key words such as, A is for apples, and G is for gate, this ABC book also selects other words that readers may already know. The alphabet lesson is delivered in small bites so that kids can choose to read several or only one page at a time. In a classroom this book would be a valuable supplemental tool when teaching the letters of the alphabet.
