Along with the words and music Bierhorst provides general observations about Indian music and the differences among the regions (most Eskimo songs can be classed as recitative; the Indians of the Northwest Coast have music that is definitely chromatic and almost eerie; Plains melodies are bold and majestic, Pueblo music eclectic and complex), suggestions for Listening to and singing the songs (like speech, much Indian song cannot be forced into a strict, regular rhythm; most Indians sing "down in the throat" and often with a very tight throat), information about their cultural background and functions (the Navajo protect themselves from spirits under the "cover" of a song, and Indians throughout North America have used song to influence nature), notes on accompanying instruments and dances, and a reminder that non-Indians must be open to the "double vision that gives Indian art, poetry, and music its special flavor."
