2 A CRY FROM THE EARTH: MUSIC OF NORTH AMERICAN INDIANS
    Bierhorst, John
1992 54610 As thoughtfully and rigorously compiled as Bierhorst's introductions to Indian poetry and folklore, this collection includes 30 Indian songs representing every "musical area," ranging from the late-18th to the mid-20th-century, and selected from thousands examined "in order to find those examples that demonstrate the melodic and rhythmic ingenuity of Indian musical art at its best." Along with the words and music Bierhorst provides general observations about Indian music and the differences among the regions (most Eskimo songs can be classed as recitative; the Indians of the Northwest Coast have music that is definitely chromatic and almost eerie; Plains melodies are bold and majestic, Pueblo music eclectic and complex), suggestions for Listening to and singing the songs (like speech, much Indian song cannot be forced into a strict, regular rhythm; most Indians sing "down in the throat" and often with a very tight throat), information about their cultural background and functions (the Navajo protect themselves from spirits under the "cover" of a song, and Indians throughout North America have used song to influence nature), notes on accompanying instruments and dances, and a reminder that non-Indians must be open to the "double vision that gives Indian art, poetry, and music its special flavor." Sources and references are meticulously noted and the book is handsomely designed and well illustrated with photos of performances, ceremonies, masks, and related artifacts. (A companion Folkways record ] contains 20 of the 30 songs included here.)
