YORK: A SLAVE'S JOURNEY WITH LEWIS AND CLARK Phillips, Brad 2006 10016356 York was born into slavery; at the very bottom of Southern society. When Meriwether Lewis invited Clark to co-captain a military unit on a mission to cross North America, York was taken along. This adventure gave York a taste of freedom and respect neither he nor his master ever anticipated. Like most slaves, York never wrote a word. Almost everything we know about him was written by his slave master, William Clark. This lack of documentary evidence is particularly unfortunate since York's experience is one of the most unique in American history. Because York was not able to record his own thoughts and feelings, the author has relied on accounts of other slaves to create an accurate picture of what his life might have been like before and after the Lewis and Clark expedition. This book will provide interesting and valuable insights into our history and of the contributions of men like York. After the expedition , the adjustment to normal life in the states was difficult for many of the men. Some returned to the frontier. Lewis committed suicide within three years. Yet none of the men faced York's dilemma. While the white heroes of the expedition were rewarded with fame, cash, and land; only York and Sacajawea received nothing. York was plunged back into the humiliating and degrading life of a common slave. Apricot Press 1-885027-36-2 / 9781885027368 Paperback New Condition Price:
