      1 CHILL FACTOR: A NOVEL
      Brown, Sandra
2005 14990 From Publishers Weekly Lust, jealousy and murder suffuse Brown's crisp thriller (after White Hot), set in the snowbound mountains of North Carolina. Lilly and Dutch Burton's marriage didn't withstand the loss of their three-year-old daughter, despite their attempt at a fresh start with the purchase of a vacation cabin in bucolic Cleary, N.C., where the novel opens on the divorced couple discussing its sale. Dutch is now Cleary's chief of police, and Lilly is a magazine editor in Atlanta. As she races back to the city to beat a blizzard, her car skids out, striking a hiker emerging from the woods. Turns out he's a man she knows: handsome freelance writer Ben Tierney, whom she met and flirted with the summer before. With no choice but to wait out the storm in the cabin with Ben, who is injured, Lilly calls Dutch, but he can't reach her via the now impassable mountain road. Meanwhile, Cleary is haunted by the case of five missing women--all now feared dead. With Lilly still stranded, Dutch goes ballistic when the FBI arrives in town with evidence that Tierney is the serial killer. The snowy suspense will cool off Brown's fans during the dog days of summer. (Aug.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From AudioFile Stephen Lang's breathy baritone adds a deep sense of disquiet as writer Ben Tierney buries a body--next to three other bodies. Is he the serial psycho, "Blue," who's been abducting women? The FBI thinks so. But Lilly Burton knows him simply as a guy she flirted with last summer. Lang keeps things intriguing enough to involve listeners as the plot struggles toward its obvious setup: A car accident and a monstrous blizzard combine to leave Lilly and Ben stranded alone at Lilly's cabin. As the pace picks up, Lang keeps anxiety on the front burner. Apprehension mounts, suspense builds, and the climax holds listeners to the headphones. 4 FAT TUESDAY (A Novel)
      Brown, Sandra
1997 40442 Precise details change with the ages, but you can bet that the first story ever written had something to do with revenge. Sandra Brown continues the tradition with her latest brick of a book, Fat Tuesday. After a gruff 'n' tuff New Orleans narc, Burke Basile, mistakenly blows a hole in his partner's noggin, he vows revenge--not only on the thug who was directly involved, but also on the sleazy kingpin behind it all.

<And in finest cop-drama tradition, he vows to do it outside the law. Fat Tuesday only begins to cook after Basile turns in his badge and--mixing charm and coercion--enlists various underworld elements in his cause. It's all a little B movie-ish at times, but for every hooker with a heart of gold, there's a fresher character like Gregory, the homosexual hustler who uses his drama degree to Basile's benefit. The villains are bad (can't go wrong with a lawyer), the heroine good, and the hero a big, wounded warrior looking for true love. What's not to like?

From Library Journal Pinkie Duvall is evil, a prominent and powerful lawyer whose clients commit most of the crime in New Orleans. He met his wife when she was a child and had her educated to his requirements. He treats her as he treats his orchids but uses threats against her younger sister to keep her in line. Burke is the "incorruptible cop" who sets out to avenge his buddy's death, clean out the bad cops, and get revenge against Pinkie.

      5 HELLO, DARKNESS
      Brown, Sandra
2003 40438 From Publishers Weekly Cue another run up the charts for bestselling Brown (The Crush), who knows just the right mix to spin: a second-chance-at-love theme rocked by the rhythms of families-in-jeopardy and the hip-hop beat of an at-risk teen subplot sure to alarm the most jaded of parents. Her latest thriller, set during a steamy Austin, Tex., summer, revolves around Paris Gibson, host of a late night radio show that dispenses classic love songs along with advice for the lovelorn that turns deadly after a caller takes Paris's on-air advice to dump a possessive boyfriend who turns out to be another regular caller, "Valentino." Refusing to be dumped, "Valentino" makes the girl his captive, phones Paris that he will kill her in 72 hours ("...her death will be on your conscience") and implies Paris may die next. Paris contacts the Austin police and reunites with one-time lover, Dean Malloy, a police psychologist who was also her dead fiance's best friend. "Valentino" 's victim, Janey Kemp, is the missing 17-year-old daughter of a prominent judge and a founder of a Sex Club Web site that arranges illicit parties that Dean's son, Gavin, also frequents, connecting him to Janey's disappearance. Paris and Dean's romance is almost trivial beside Janey's dehumanizing captivity, although Brown's shallow characterizations of Janey and other Sex Club teens registers the only off note in this fast-reading thriller. The adult suspects are better developed: Lancy, an ex-con/janitor/former porn star trying to make good; Stan, a radio employee whose family connections are the only reason he has a job; John, a cop who sees nothing wrong with "hands on" undercover work; and Brad, a sex-addicted dentist. The unmasking of the killer comes with a riveting finale that will leave fans begging for an encore. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc. From AudioFile Victor Slezak's sensuous voice is just right for Brown's tale of a second chance at love for Paris Gibson, who hosts a late night radio show devoted to love songs and call-ins from the lovelorn. A threatening call from a man calling himself "Valentino," who claims to have a hostage he will kill in 72 hours, leads Paris to contact her former lover, Dean Malloy, now an Austin Police psychologist. (Malloy is also her late fiancé's best friend.) With his calm reading, Slezak sensationalizes neither the sex club that Malloy's son and the hostage take part in nor the character of the sex-addicted dentist, who may be a suspect. 6 PLAY DIRTY
      Brown, Sandra
2007 52429 #1 New York Times bestselling author Sandra Brown is back with a gripping story of obsession and its deadly consequences. After five long years in federal prison, Griff Burkett is a free man. But the disgraced Cowboys quarterback can never return to life as he knew it before he was caught cheating. In a place where football is practically a religion, Griff committed a cardinal sin, and no one is forgiving. Foster Speakman, owner and CEO of SunSouth Airlines, and his wife, Laura, are a golden couple. Successful and wealthy, they lived a charmed life before fate cruelly intervened and denied them the one thing they wanted most -- a child. It's said that money can't buy everything. But it can buy a disgraced football player fresh out of prison and out of prospects. The job Griff agrees to do for the Speakmans demands secrecy. But he soon finds himself once again in the spotlight of suspicion. An unsolved murder comes back to haunt him in the form of his nemesis, Stanley Rodarte, who has made Griff's destruction his life's mission. While safeguarding his new enterprise, Griff must also protect those around him, especially Laura Speakman, from Rodarte's ruthlessness. Griff stands to gain the highest payoff he could ever imagine, but cashing in on it will require him to forfeit his only chance for redemption...and love. Griff is now playing a high-stakes game, and at the final whistle, one player will be dead. Play Dirty is Sandra Brown's wildest ride yet, with hairpin turns of plot all along the way. The clock is ticking down on a fallen football star, who lost everything because of the way he played the game. Now his future -- his life --hinges on one last play. Publishers Weekly The seven deadly sins help propel this provocative, sex-fueled thriller from bestseller Brown (Ricochet). Foster Speakman, an eccentric Texas paraplegic millionaire, offers $500,000 to Griff Burkett, a disgraced former NFL quarterback fresh out of prison after serving a five-year sentence for racketeering, to impregnate Foster's wife, Laura. Foster insists the child be conceived naturally ("The way God intended"). Broke with no prospects, Griff takes the job. Meanwhile, Stanley Rodarte, the crooked detective behind Griff's arrest, is bent on pinning an unsolved murder on him and takes to terrorizing Griff and those close to him in the hopes of nailing him when he self-destructs. After Griff's stint as stud takes a bad turn, the ex-footballer must track down the one man who can secure his freedom. The tension builds as lust, greed, pride, wrath and envy threaten to undo everyone in this tightly told tale of modern temptation. (Aug.)Copyright 2007 Reed Business Information Kirkus Reviews Fallen gridiron great, fresh out of prison, reluctantly agrees to impregnate the wife of a disabled millionaire. After doing five years for throwing a game to settle a gambling debt with a crime syndicate, former Dallas Cowboy Griff Burkett knows his employment options are limited. A social pariah, the one-time hero quarterback is despised by the very public that once worshipped him. Still, he understandably balks when wheelchair-bound airline mogul Foster Speakman taps the ex-con for a most indecent proposal: knock-up his wife Laura; keep the baby's real paternity a secret; walk away with millions. The gig sounds too good to be true, and the fact that Speakman insists on a "natural" conception rather than artificial means that something is not quite right. For his part, Griff does need the money, and Mrs. Speakman, while not exactly his usual type, is certainly easy on the eyes. The two have several meetings, and devoted wife Laura immediately finds herself torn with guilt over the infidelity, but also stirred by the feelings hunky Griff brings out in her. Meanwhile, Griff is being tailed by Detective Rodarte, a twisted cop who will stop at nothing (rape, murder) to see Griff back in jail or dead. After an especially passionate interlude with Griff, Laura conceives, but her joy is short-lived as her husband meets a sudden grisly end, Publsihed at twenty seven dollars. Simon & Schuster Adult Publishing Group 0-7432-8935-8 / 9780743289351

      8 STANDOFF
      Brown, Sandra
2000 16025  A fearless reporter trapped in a volatile siege, two young lovers turned fugitive, and a holdup that transforms a small desert town into a powder keg? Now #1New York Times best-selling author Sandra Brown demonstrates her unparalleled powers of invention to once again tell a story that combines deep emotion with edge-of-the-seat suspense.

Poignant, riveting, and offering a new twist or turn on every page, STANDOFF is suspense at its best, as only Sandra Brown can create it. From The Critics Barnes & Noble Guide to New Fiction TV reporter Tiel McCoy is driving through New Mexico when she hears on the radio that the teenage daughter of a Texas multimillionaire has been kidnapped. McCoy calls her editor and learns that the girl is pregnant and was kidnapped by her boyfriend. When the reporter stops at a gas station and an armed couple (the missing girl and her boyfriend) rob the cashier, a tense standoff ensues, and it becomes clear that the couple would rather die together than surrender and be kept apart. Publishers Weekly Workaholic Dallas TV reporter Tiel McCoy thought she would take a well-earned vacation, but while driving to a secluded condo in New Mexico, she hears a radio report that changes her plans. Teenager Sabra Dendy, only daughter of Fort Worth multimillionaire Russ Dendy, has been kidnapped. Soon Tiel learns that Sabra, who's pregnant, has run away with her boyfriend, Ronnie Davison. Smelling a story, Tiel heads for the remote town of Hera to interview Ronnie's father, thinking the couple might go there for help. But when she stops at a convenience store for directions, Tiel encounters Ronnie and Sabra bungling a hold-up attempt. As Sabra goes into labor, Ronnie takes everyone in the store hostage, and Tiel and a handsome cowboy who seems to know a lot about medicine deliver Sabra's daughter. Tiel learns that the desperate young couple are fleeing to Mexico to escape Sabra's dictatorial father, who has vowed to separate them and put their baby up for adoption. He has even threatened to kill the child, and Sabra and Ronnie have vowed to commit suicide if they are thwarted. Bestselling author Brown (The Alibi) sets up believable conflicts (Ronnie once killed a puppy, rather than return it to an abusive owner). If the dialogue and sex scenes occasionally seem stilted, this popular author's tale still hits hard and keeps moving briskly to its satisfying conclusion. 10 The Crush
      Brown, Sandra
2002 999735 Dr. Rennie Newton thought she was doing the right thing when she voted to acquit contract killer Ricky Lozada while serving on a jury. But when Lozada is released, he begins calling her and leaving flowers. Suddenly Rennie's carefully structured life begins to crumble when a rival doctor at her hospital is murdered and suspicion falls on Rennie. Detective Wick Threadgill, who believes in Rennie's innocence, steps in to protect her. But will he get there in time to stop a twisted sociopath's deadly obsession? Book Magazine Brown's latest novel is utter dreck. Consider the characters: The heroine, a supersexy surgeon with the trendy gender-ambiguous moniker of Dr. Rennie Newton, is straight off The Lifetime Channel; the gumshoe, Wick Threadgill, is a jaded but sexy beach bum; the villain, Lozado, is sexier than anyone else. Among Lozado's prized possessions are a pricey bachelor pad and a tank of scorpions. Astonishingly, Brown has become very successful with such stuff-her books have sold 60 million copies and been translated into thirty languages. Perhaps translation improves the prose: In English it's all cliché-no one is killed but "brutally slain," no carpet is less than "lush," no naughty musing is unaccompanied by a "shiver of pleasure." As Lozado stalks Rennie and Wick's heart pounds for her, we're plunged into a tale of obsession and suspense and betrayal and lust and daring and romance and tears and we've heard it a thousand times before. Publishers Weekly Brown's latest thriller pits the infamous Ricky Lozada, an unscrupulous killer for hire, against Wick Threadgill, a wily, disgruntled detective on leave from the force. Threadgill's former partner, Oren Wesley, lures him back with the news that Lozada-against whom Threadgill has a personal vendetta-has murdered a respected doctor. The author ups the stakes by giving Threadgill and the killer the same love interest: Dr. Rennie Newton, a no-nonsense surgeon who unwittingly attracts Lozada's obsessive attention while serving on a jury that acquits him for murder. Newton's secret past raises doubts about where exactly her loyalties lie, and Brown deftly builds suspense around the romantic aspect of her story. She also scores points for her insight into the sociopath's mind, despite a rather facile explanation of how he went bad. (Not everyone with a handicapped younger sibling who gets all the parents' attention ends up a ruthless killer.) Similarly, the underlying reason for Dr. Newton's startling transformation from a young adult who lived on the wild side to a cold, controlled professional is too pat. Worst of all, Brown's prose seems aimed at an audience of eighth-graders, padded throughout with a slew of adjectives, useless descriptions and catch phrases ("Is that your final answer?"). But once things get rolling, the plot crackles with tension moving toward the final showdown between Lozada and Wick. Brown fans will not be disappointed. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information. Library Journal An anonymous gift of roses shows up inside the locked house of surgeon Rennie Newton, signaling the unraveling of her carefully ordered existence. The murder of a close colleague further plunges her into even more difficulties when she becomes the prime suspect of the Fort Worth PD. She forms an uneasy alliance with detective Wick Threadgill, a homicide investigator on indefinite leave from the department, who comes back to solve the case and fall in love with her. Unfortunately, she looks guilty. Brown ventures into pretty dark territory here: the workings of a sociopath's mind. The suspense and the sexual tension build and build, leaving the listener breathless and willing to forgive the rather bloated prose. Tom Wopat has his Texas accents down, but don't expect any sense of place or character development in the author's latest best seller-this one is totally plot driven. An enjoyable story, but the listener will forget it as soon as the last tape is complete. Mind candy for the masses; libraries should purchase accordingly.-Barbara A. Grand Central Publishing 0-446-52704-1 / 9780446527040

      11 THE SWITCH - A NOVEL
      Brown, Sandra
      02869122  Hard Cover. NEW Book Jacket. 6 x 9. "

Identical twins are fair game for a thriller writer, and in The Switch, queen of suspense Sandra Brown (The Alibi, Standoff, Fat Tuesday) makes the most of an int ricate setup involving Gillian and Melina Lloyd, a pair of thirtysomething Dallas beauties.

When Gillian hears her biological clock ticking, she puts herself in the hands of the world-famous Waters Cl inic and is artificially inseminated . The action picks up when Gillian switches places with her twin, a media escort, and chauffeurs sexy astronaut Chief Hart around town. It turns out to be a fat al attraction, and suspicion falls on Chief when Gillian's mutilated body is found the next day.

The dead woman's smarmy and enigmatic boyfriend, Jem Hennings, has a vested interest in focusing police efforts on Hart, but Melina has her own reasons for thinking him wrong. Jem's connection with a charismatic preacher known as Brother Gabriel is at the heart of this mildly creepy mystery, in which t he plucky Melina tracks Brother Gabriel to his lair and uncovers his diabolical plot while simultaneously revealing her own dark secret. The ending is telegraphed well in advance, but that won't deter Brown's many fans from relishing the details, including some sex scenes that are spicier than most of the florid prose that usually turns up in romantic thrillers of this sort. But that may be w hy the author inevitably rockets to the top of the bestseller list, where 'The Switch' is destined to land. Clean new copy , PUBLISHED AT Twenty Six dollars. 468 pages.

      12 Unspeakable (Audio Cassette Program)
      Brown, Sandra
1998 45091  Carl Herbold is a cold-blooded psychopath who has just escaped the penitentiary where he was serving a life sentence. Bent on revenge, he's going back to where he began--Blewer County, Texas.

Born deaf, lately widowed, Anna Corbett fights to keep the ranch that is her son's birthright, unaware that she is at the center of Herbold's horrific scheme--and that her world of self-imposed isolation is about to explode. Drifter Jack Sawyer arrives at Anna's ranch asking for work, hoping to protect the innocent woman and her son from Herbold's rage. But Sawyer can't outrun the secrets that stalk him--or the day of reckoning awaiting them all.

A 20-year-old unsolved murder in a small East Texas town sets the stage for this fast-paced and romantically charged, if stiffly written, thriller, the latest (after Fat Tuesday) from the prolific Brown. Everyone in Blewer, Texas, assumes that the nefarious Herbold brothers, Carl and Cecil, murdered Patsy McCorkle two decades ago, but neither was ever charged with the killing. Carl, the more menacing brother, has spent those decades in an Arkansas prison for an unrelated crime. But now Carl has escaped and Blewer residents fear he might come back to town. Local rancher Delray Corbett has more to fear than most -- the Herbolds are his estranged stepsons. So when drifter Jack Sawyer swaggers onto Delray's ranch looking for work, Delray hires him, thinking that Jack's presence will ease his mind regarding the safety of his deaf, widowed daughter-in-law, Anna, and her five-year-old son, David. But Delray doesn't know that Jake has a closer connection to Blewer, and to the Corbetts, than he's letting on. Brown's deftly plotted narrative twists and turns without losing hold of its suspense.

Her characters are fully fleshed out, and she pays particular attention to Anna's situation as a deaf woman facing ignorance in a rural community. Some graphic sex and violence and the voices of these east Texan good (and bad) ol' boys animate this harrowing tale of crime, revenge and redemption. Library Journal Deaf widow Anna Corbett, her young son, and her father-in-law hire a drifter, Jack Sawyer, as a handyman on their small east Texas ranch. There's much to do around the place since Anna's husband died and his two wild stepbrothers were sent up for murder. Patriarch Delray Corbett wants to preserve the ranch despite increasing pressure from a smarmy developer. Jack's a hard worker, and he's deeply attracted to Anna and young David. Meanwhile, evil stepbrother Carl escapes from prison and sets off a chain reaction of robbery, brutality, and murder as he moves ever closer to the Corbett ranch. He's bent on revenge for being nailed by his daddy for a murder he claims he didn't commit. As the story plays out in a maelstrom of death and destruction, it becomes increasingly clear that Jack holds the key to Carl's alibi, an unsolved murder, and the mystery surrounding Anna's self-imposed silence. Brown (Fat Tuesday, LJ 5/1/97) is a master at weaving a story of romance, action, and suspense into a tight web that catches and holds the reader from first page to last. This is sure to be a hit with fans of her previous works and gain her an even wider readership. Highly recommended. --Susan Clifford, Aerospace Corp., El Segundo, CA Library Journal Deaf widow Anna Corbett, her young son, and her father-in-law hire a drifter, Jack Sawyer, as a handyman on their small east Texas ranch.. l
