1991 10014534 Graced with striking, evocative artwork, these stirring anthologies--featuring unicorn lore in the first, works about horses in the second--contain compositions stories and poems by such noted authors as C. S. Lewis, Jane Yolen Nathaniel Hawthorne and Carl Sandburg. Grade 5-10-- "Horses that you might like to make a part of your life" compose this anthology of 17 poems, stories, and book excerpts. Coville has gathered an eclectic mix of true and imaginary tales from many times and cultures. The familiar equine characters include Black Beauty, Flicka, Bucephalus, and Pegasus. Authors such as Marguerite Henry, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Carl Sandburg add literary quality. Surprisingly, the standouts are two stories from the 1980s. Peter Roop's "Prairie Lightning" tells an exciting episode of a Blackfoot boy's theft of an elk-dog. Mary Stanton's "Sunrise" is an evocative first-person narrative about a girl, her stepmother, and a not-so-new horse. These two stories might not make the book a worthwhile purchase, for much of its material is available elsewhere. However, it could fill the gap left by the lack of similar collections. Suzanne Wilding's Horse Tales (St. Martin's, 1976; o.p.) seems to be the most recently published hardcover anthology on horses. - Doubleday Books for Young Readers 0-385-41905-8 / 9780385419055
