CLOUDLAND Burningham, John 1996 9487 ABOUT THE BOOK Cloudland ANNOTATION While high in the mountains with his parents, Albert falls off a cliff and ends up in Cloudland, where he enjoys playing with the cloud children, but misses his parents. FROM THE PUBLISHER Illustrated in full color. Only John Burningham-four-time winner of a New York Times Best Illustrated Book of the Year award and twice the recipient of Britain's prestigious Kate Greenaway Award-could have created this subtle and magical fantasy about the dreams of childhood. While hiking in the mountains with his parents, Albert tumbles off a cliff-but is saved by the cloud children who utter magic words that make him very light and keep him from falling. Albert has a wonderful time jumping, swimming, painting, and racing in the sky with the cloud children (he even walks along the jet stream of an airplane!)...until he remembers his mother and father and his own little bed at home. It takes the cloud queen, the man in the moon, and a few more magic words to return Albert to earth. Glorious mixed-media illustrations leap from the oversize pages of this delightful new book by "one of the finest and most original writers at work today" (The New Yorker). A Book-of-the-Month Club Main Selection. FROM THE CRITICS Publishers Weekly It's hardly a new theme: by accident (literally), a child finds himself in a new world-in this case, a land in the clouds, populated by playful cloud children-where each day offers yet another fantastic experience; eventually, however, the child yearns for the familiarity of home and family, and enlists his new friends in helping him return. In the hands of the incomparable Burningham (Hey! Get Off Our Train; Aldo), this familiar story takes on new depth and poignancy while never losing the giddy appeal of adventure. The lean, trenchant text approximates the simple forcefulness of childhood speech. But the book's real power lies in the stop-them-in-their-tracks illustrations. Cut-outs of Burningham's signature line-drawn figures are set against backgrounds that are photographic, painted or a combination of the two; the resulting compositions feel at once both ethereal and cozily handmade. This is a stunning book-whether the reader takes Cloudland at its considerable face value, or is able to ponder its underlying meanings of death, afterlife and rebirth. It promises to resonate with readers of all ages. Ages 4-8. (Oct.) School Library Journal PreS-Gr 4After a day of mountain climbing high above the clouds, Albert and his parents head for home. Suddenly, the boy trips and falls off a cliff. His parents weep, but someone else is watching out for him. With a few magic words, a group of "cloud children" help the youngster float safely to Cloudland. Albert happily joins in their daily games, but soon begins to miss his parents and seeks the help of the Cloud Queen. Following a grand farewell party with the Man in the Moon, and a few more magic words (recited backwards, of course), the boy finds himself safely back in his own bed. Children will delight in this fantasy, while being reassured by Albert's return home. Burningham's signature-style figures lighten his mixed-media illustrations, which combine painted photographs and drawings. His characters float and frolic within skyscapes that alternate between light and spacious and dark and forbidding. Occasional wordless double-page spreads poignantly advance the story. A good choice for story time and independent reading. Condition: Excellent inside - outside corners show shelf wear. Two of the inside pages have small area where something sticky was removed, leaving a mark on each page. Beautfilly illustrated volume childrenof all ages will appreciate and want to rea again and again. Crown Books for Young Readers 0-517-70928-7 / 9780517709283 Hardcover Very Good New York, N.Y. WHEN WE WERE YOUNG: A COMPENDIUM OF CHILDHOOD Burningham, John 2005 21000 In John Burningham's enchanting compendium of childhood, the well-known and the unknown contribute funny, moving, magical, sometimes dark childhood memories. Among them are Michael Palin's account of his first family seaside holiday, Donna Tartt's affecting encounter with a hummingbird, and Seamus Heaney's recollection of a crashed Cadbury's chocolate truck. Whether the childhoods are from the war years or later, from the town or the country, ordinary or unbelievable, the book is full of rare insights into the "other country" of the past. Woven into the mix is a rich selection of quotations and more than fifty of John Burningham's witty and distinctive illustrations. John Burningham, twice winner of the Kate Greenaway Medal, is the celebrated author and illustrator of many beloved books for children, including Avocado Baby, Borka, Trubloff, and Cloudland. His most recent book for adults is a wry compendium of old age, The Time of Your Life. From The Critics Library Journal This delightful collection, compiled by children's author and illustrator Burningham (Avocado Baby), presents the childhood memories of contributors both well known and obscure. Kofi Annan recalls learning to focus on the positive from his school days in Ghana, C.S. Lewis tells his childhood nightmares, and Winston Churchill reminisces about his first day at boarding school. But most touching are the accounts from World War II. When Tom Maschler heard a loud knock at the door while a child in Berlin, he knew that Nazi soldiers had come for his father. Sylvia Syms remembers that as soon as war was declared, she was sent with her brother and sister from her parents in London, a dislocation that caused her problems into adulthood. These sometimes witty, sometimes poignant selections reinforce the importance of childhood and the durability of those early memories. They also serve as a reminder of the impact of war on the young. Photographs are dispersed throughout, as are a number of Burningham's own clever illustrations. Particularly fitting is the donation of all royalties to UNICEF. Enthusiastically recommended for all large public libraries.- Bloomsbury UK 0-7475-7663-7 / 9780747576631 Soft Cover As New Condition London Price:
