HOW YUSSEL CAUGHT THE GEFILTE FISH: A SHABBOS STORY Herman, Charlotte 1999 12756 From the Publisher Publisher Yussel learns two things: that gefilte fish are not round in the lake and that the spice which makes them so delicious is the peace of the Sabbath. A charming book about a boy being initiated into one of the mysteries of life by his father-how to catch gefilte fish. Delicately illustrated in watercolors. From The Critics Children's Literature Papa always goes early on Friday mornings to the lake and catches the fish for the Sabbath gefilte fish balls that Yussel loves. When he is finally old enough to go along with Papa, as Papa went with his father, he's lucky enough to catch three beautiful fish-but no gefiltes! Neither the fat, golden carp (which reminds Papa of Aunt Goldie) nor the trout with brown spots (which seems to have cousin Hannah Rose's eager personality) nor the pike that almost got away (as stubborn as Uncle Harry!) is round as Yussel knows a gefilte would have to be. No matter: Mama "works her miracles" anyway, and Yussel learns about the special spice that really makes everything taste so wonderfully special for Shabbos. The warmth of the story is captured perfectly in Krenina's light-suffused pictures. The angle of her tilted faces is reminiscent of holy paintings from another era and gently prepares the reader to accept the mystical experience embedded in an eagerly anticipated Sabbath Day. School Library Journal K-Gr 3-Herman's story of a family's traditional celebration of the Jewish Sabbath suffers from an insubstantial plot. On Yussel's first fishing trip with his Papa he catches three big fish. Although none of the creatures looks like the round fish balls that his Mama makes every Shabbat, the two take them home. Yussel helps Mama prepare the meal, but is unable to understand what makes a gefilte fish. He goes to the synagogue, then shares the Sabbath meal with his extended family. Finally the boy understands that the peace evident in the family's celebration is the "special spice" that transforms a fish into a gefilte fish. The family in Krenina's attractive illustrations is dressed in the style of Eastern-European Jews of the late 19th century. Painted on backgrounds of pale green and shades of beige and brown, their round, stylized faces are reminiscent of paintings from the 1930s and '40s. While the story is well written and nicely illustrated, it seems improbable that a child who watches his mother cook the same meal each week wouldn't know that "gefilte fish" is the name of a cooked dish rather than a kind of fish. And Shabbat peace is a pretty heady ingredient (albeit a magical one) for a plate of fish balls. A marginal purchase.-Susan Scheps, Shaker Heights Public Library, OH Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information. Kirkus Reviews This lovely story of tradition and family security has moments both gentle and funny, and a recipe for the main dish.
