Sky Detective: Investigating the Mysteries of Space - Grades 4-6 Eames, David (Illustrator) 1993 10009950 Grade 4-6-- The pluses of this star guide are mostly in the text. Docekal gives explanations of how other cultures, besides those of Western Europe, interpreted the stars (though this description is more anecdotal than documented). The guide also gives information for sky viewing in both northern and sourthern hemispheres, which many astronomy books don't do. On the negative side, the black-and-white drawings aren't always explicit. Little white dots on a black field make it difficult to convey differences in star color or size. And the small diagrams aren't as helpful in locating star constellations as the full sky maps for different months and times. For that, H. A. Rey's classic The Stars (Houghton, 1973) is still superior. The experiments included in Sky Detectives are often familiar (viewing an eclipse through a pinhole), and many involve night photography, something for which many children may lack the equipment and expertise. This book is probably more useful for reading indoors than for star-spotting outside, despite its format. --Cathryn A. Camper, Minneapolis Public Library Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. Product Description Explores, through the use of experiments, the secrets of the universe, and examines the legends behind constellations such as Orion and Sirius. This book explains how to chart the movements of the stars; how to use binoculars; and how to photograph the stars at night.
