Dees made his move against Metzger after Mulugeta Seraw, an Ethiopian college student, was beaten to death in Portland, Oregon, in 1988. Several skinheads eventually pleaded guilty to the murder, and, when evidence of a connection between their violence and Metzger's propaganda surfaced, Dees went to work. This account of the research, acumen, persuasion, strategy, instinct, and plain old good luck that shaped and steered the case in the Seraw family's favor is both chilling and hopeful.
