2002 170002035 The manufacture of damask, grosgrain, satin, taffeta, and other fabrics and cords of silk are illustrated in this double-sized volume, with diagrams and close up views of the weaves, the construction of the many-bobbined weaving equipment, and the complexities of making velour. Enduring a quarter-century of attacks by Jesuit authorities, jail, suppressions by the government, and the desertion of his editorial partner Jean d'Alembert, Denis Diderot managed nonetheless to produce this Encyclopedia—a virtual treatise on the state of human affairs in the western world in the mid-18th century. One of the great features of his magnum opus was its thousands of meticulously rendered plates, laying bare the mysteries of astronomy, tanning, fort-building, printing, metal-founding, ceramics, goldsmithing, and the many other technologies of the world on the eve of the Industrial Revolution. These magnificent illustrations of the arts, sciences, and trades are reproduced here in 40 large-format volumes, which we have imported, on an exclusive basis, from France. Most of each volume is comprised of plates, which are facsimiles of the original edition. The only text is the facsimile descriptions of what is on the plates, in French. First published over the course of more than twenty years (1751-1777), the 32 volumes of the Encyclopédie include 21 volumes of text with more than 70,000 articles on subjects ranging from asparagus to zodiac. The remaining 11 volumes contain beautifully engraved plates illustrating many of the articles. The Encyclopédie was the major achievement of the French Enlightenment whose aim, in Diderot's words, was to "change the common way of thinking" through the expansion of knowledge and the development of critical modes of thought.
