RISE AND SHINE French, Fiona 1992 14858 From The Critics School Library Journal PreS-Gr 3-- French's book joins Barbara and Ed Emberley's One Wide River to Cross (Prentice-Hall, 1966; o.p.) as one of the few based on a musical rendition of the Noah story. The rhythmic language of the black spiritual buoys listeners along, while French's majestic illustrations add visual delight. Rather than retelling the Genesis story, the book expresses the joy of salvation experienced once by Noah and again by those who reach St. Peter at the heavenly gates. Noah, with his unruly beard and dressed in colorful flowing garments, builds a massive ship to house the animals. The vibrant, striped patterns of his robe recur both on the ark itself and on the fruitful hillsides after the flood subsides. The quilt-like effect catches the eye and makes the book a good choice for group sharing. The only oversight is the absence of a musical score so that those unfamiliar with the tune could join in the uplifting melody that demands to be sung. --Kathy Piehl, Mankato State University, Minn.
