LITTLEST DUCKLING Herman, Gail 1996 20331 From the Publisher When a mama duck asks her four little ducklings what they want to do on a beautiful sunny day, itÆs the littlest duckling who thinks of swimming in the pond. But when itÆs time to go home, where is the littlest duckling? Bright, bold pictures enliven this tale of fun and curiosity for the youngest picture book fan. A charming read-aloud that will serve well at nap or bedtime. ùSchool Library Journal From The Critics Children's Literature A mother duck and her four tiny ducklings leave their nest to swim in the pond. Three of the ducklings keep right up with their mother. The youngest of the ducklings always lags behind. When the family arrives at the pond, three of the ducklings amuse themselves by swimming and playing games. The fourth little ducking floats in the pond and daydreams as he watches the clouds. So much is he daydreaming that when his mother and siblings leave to go home, the fourth duckling mistakenly stays behind. What follows is an adventure that leads him home on his own private adventure. This is a charming story that will appeal to toddlers and preschoolers. School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1-A sweet story that features buttercup yellow ducklings, a cheery refrain ("Waddle, waddle/Quack, quack"), and a winsome littlest one who's a bit too much of a dreamer to be as dutiful as his siblings. He is lucky, though, as he finds his way home from the pond by following a little girl's inflatable duck. The text is strongly supported by illustrations that embrace the essence of simplicity in all but the glorious carpet of grass, flowers, and insects that the ducks waddle and quack through. A charming read-aloud that will serve well at nap or bedtime.-Jody McCoy, Casady School, Oklahoma City BookList With lots of repetition and bright, clear pictures, this is a family story for very young children, especially those who feel they are always trailing behind their bigger brothers and sisters. The mama duck asks her four little ducklings what they want to do on a beautiful sunny morning, and the littlest duckling suggests they swim in the pond. As they waddle and quack through the very small clearing and the very small wood to the very small pond, the littlest duckling is all the way at the end. When it's time to go home, that last little dreamy duckling nearly gets left behind, but he does make it back to snuggle down in the nest with the others. As in John Schoenherr's "Rebel" (1995), the pictures add mischief to the cozy story. Listed at Fourteen dollars.
