The girls also share makeup tips, their favorite never-leave-home-without-it items, their least favorite physical features, what they love about their jobs (like kissing Brad Pitt) and what they don't love about them (like never getting to see friends), and where they hang out. Jane's own makeup and hairstyling gurus provide beauty techniques and tips especially tailored to girls under 20. From The Critics VOYA Twenty-four young women ranging in age from thirteen to nineteen reveal their ideas about beauty and style in this hip magazine-style volume. Pratt, founder of Sassy magazine, gives structure to each article by presenting her subjects with the same fill-in-the-blank statement, such as "I freak out if I leave home without," "How long it takes me to get ready for a party (with details on what is involved)," or "I can't leave home without my." Cute family snapshots contrast vividly with the gorgeous portraits made for the book by photographer Christy Bush. Funky (and sometimes nearly illegible) typefaces combine with an eye-popping use of color and dazzling page layouts. Equestrienne Allison Firestone is here, as are tennis stars Serena and Venus Williams, gymnast Domenique Moceanu, country singer LeAnn Rimes, violinist Vanessa-Mae, skater Oksana Baiul, visually impaired high school student Sharon Anyimi, actress Natalie Portman, and scientist Ting Luo. Pratt even includes a tongue-in-cheek interview with Japanese computer-generated "typical teen" Kyoko Date. While there is some diversity in these young voices, the message here is repeated again and again: less makeup is good, set your own style, don't follow the crowd, beauty comes from within. Since nearly all of these girls are beautiful, famous, well-off, and, except for Amyimi, non-physically challenged, the message may be a little difficult to accept.
