2001 43474 In a chilling what-if scenario that could come true tomorrow, a ruthless warrior calling himself Batu Khan has forged a menacing new empire across Central Asia and Mongolia. Wedding his primitive killer instincts to a high-tech arsenal, Batu and his merciless armies approach Europe on a tide of terror and butchery. And after discovering a dark secret about the president of the United States, Batu seizes a terrifying advantage. At the center of this gathering storm is former fighter pilot Matt Wilder, now a counterintelligence operative for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. He is currently investigating a bizarre string of murders committed by solid citizens who suddenly snap - ordinary people who possess almost superhuman strength and unnaturally heightened senses. Wilder's discovery of the shocking truth about these violent outbursts leads to an unforeseen connection to Batu Khan. When Batu's forces bring the world to the brink of conflagration, only a handful of U.S. military and White House insiders know the true gravity of this ominous situation. Library Journal In film and television writer LaManna's first attempt at fiction, Baku Khan, a modern-day Ghengis Khan from Mongolia, has reunited the nations of the Asian steppes into a new and brutal empire. Having developed or stolen enough modern military technology to make himself a threat to the United States, Khan has also used mind-altering drugs to turn both some of his elite soldiers and a few American citizens into super-strength killers. As the body count mounts, Air Force investigator Matt Wilder connects the murders with Khan and a cover-up in the upper echelons of the White House. Sadly, the story line and the characters do not ring true, and the action is too fast-paced. The implausible premise and ridiculous plot will make readers used to the impeccable logic of a Tom Clancy thriller very uncomfortable. Only for larger collections with the money to spare. Robert Conroy, Warren, MI Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information. Kirkus Reviews Hyperbrisk first novel by screenwriter LaManna, whose credits include Jackie Chan's Rush Hour. At a secret weapons research center in the Australian desert, a monstrously superhuman Infiltrator murders two soldiers, sets a trip-bomb, and escapes into the desert. Spotting the monster's Land Rover 20 miles off in the desert, USAF counterintelligence officer Matt Wilder revs up a jet engine piggybacked onto a flatbed semitrailer and drives after him in a truck barely touching earth at 350 m.p.h., transmission white-hot and a rear tire blowing before he rams the Land Rover but finds that his bullets have little effect on the Infiltrator, whose huge hands start to crack Matt's bones like drumsticks on a Thanksgiving turkey. Then things really pick up. The unholy Trans-Altaic Alliance, a group of once politically meaningless states now fearsomely joined and ruled by Batu Khan, starts to release its incredibly powerful mounted commandos to take over further regions for seaports and other strategic needs. Back at his Office of Special Investigations at Andrews AFB, Wilder is forced to shoot a friendly 50-year-old nurse who suddenly has superhuman strength and goes berserk with a knife. Similar bizarrely violent incidents erupt nationwide: MAD YUPPIE DISEASE??? asks the Enquirer. The UN sits infirm when Batu Khan invades Georgia. President Marsh, studying Khan, learns that their battle will not be atomic but man to man, will to will. Someone powerful tries to quash Matt's investigation of the incidents, but he persists. When Batu Khan's bombers and elite commandos take the Ukraine, President Marsh issues an ultimatum: Get out today or else. Marsh and Wilder get a demo of our futuristicnew weapons, including planes that fly at Mach 12 and can go anywhere on earth and return in two hours on one tank of gas-just what Matt needs when Batu unleashes a flight of Stealth fighters toward Washington and President Random House Publishing Group 0345439929 / 9780345439925
