DANGEROUS ATTACHMENTS Lovett, Sarah 1995 18459 ABOUT THE BOOK Dangerous Attachments ANNOTATION Introducing a brilliant new star in the mystery firmament--and a bold and brainy new female sleuth. When forensic pathologist Sylvia Strange's evaluation of a sociopath--whose gruesome hobby is "harvesting" body parts from other inmates--results in his loss of parole, her life is threatened by his family. FROM THE PUBLISHER Dr. Sylvia Strange, forensic psychiatrist, is having a problem with one of her imprisoned clients: The authorities suspect Lucas Watson of mutilating his fellow inmates and keeping their body parts as souvenirs. When Lucas escapes, seeming intent on claiming Dr. Strange as his next victim, a terrifying race begins to neutralize this madman and save the lives of his shrink and her loved ones. It takes all of Strange's psychological insights, courage, and investigator's cunning to outwit her patient and survive. FROM THE CRITICS Library Journal This first novel marks the initial installment in a new mystery series starring a forensic psychologist with the enigmatic name of Sylvia Strange. A simultaneous audio releasenot common for a first novelindicates that Sue Grafton and Patricia Cornwell may be looking over their shoulders soon. BookList - Emily Melton A first printing of 50,000 and lots of prepress publicity will get Lovett's debut book off to a fine start, and her publicist's claim that she's the new Patricia Cornwell should help generate sales. Lovett, who's been a forensic researcher for the New Mexico penitentiary, sets her story in that dark, merciless prison. Her heroine, psychiatrist Sylvia Strange, is asked to evaluate inmate Lucas Watson for parole. Watson's father has powerful friends in high places, and even though Lucas is known as a sociopathic killer whose trademark is cutting off his victim's body parts and keeping them as souvenirs, the elder Watson is determined to use his influence to make sure Lucas is freed. But when Lucas is found dead, and a prison riot erupts, Sylvia finds herself surrounded by violence, stalked by an unknown enemy, and fighting to save herself and her sanity before a terrifying killer makes her his next victim. Fans of the genre will no doubt be delighted by this promising debut. AudioFile - Jeanette Larson Dr. Sylvia Strange is a forensic psychiatrist asked to evaluate New Mexico prison inmate Lucas Watson for possible parole. A psychopathic killer who collects body parts, Watson develops a dangerous attachment to Dr. Strange, which is reminiscent of Hannibal Lecter's relationship with FBI agent Starling in Silence of the Lambs. Lindsay Crouse's performance is not quite tough enough for the rough language and tough characters, especially the male roles, and she occasionally lapses into a strange Southern accent. Her pace is perfect, however, as she methodically narrates this tale of obsession and terror, which will delight fans of the genre. J.L. cAudioFile, Portland, Maine WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING Dangerous Attachments continues to surprise and excite to the very end. An emotional, vivid thriller. - Vincent Bugliosi If you're looking for...heart-pounding excitement, you can bungee jump into the Grand Canyon or you can pick up Dangerous Attachments. It is intense, frightening, vivid, true, and above all, literate -- and forensic psychologist Sylvia Strange is surely one of the most unforgettable characters in mystery fiction today. - Douglas Preston The Random House Publishing Group 0-679-43559-X / 9780679435594 Hardcover Very Good Westminster, Maryland, U.S.A. ENCYCLOPEDIA OF EXTREMELY WEIRD ANIMALS Lovett, Sarah 1997 1101010558 "Material in this edition previously published by John Muir Publications in the Extremely weird series"--T.p. verso. Includes index. This dense pop-culture encyclopedia shoulders a serious mission: a call to arms on behalf of endangered species. Large stock photos mixed with cartoony color sketches join the thick, black type to create high impact that will appeal to middle-grade readers. Resisting a more comprehensive approach, Lovett carefully limits her focus to 21 animals--thereby providing enough information into which readers can sink their teeth. Her wildlife selections illustrate all of the formidable threats: human development that changes habitats; over-hunting; fashion demands on animal skin, feathers and eggs; pesticides that climb up the food chain; and the introduction of non-native species (even house cats can do damage). The in-depth text is enlivened by sidebars that address a variety of topics: editorials on animal-tested cosmetics, where to order plans for bat houses, information on the Endangered Species Act, how to join Tree Amigos and other nature-protecting organizations, and introductions to New York City's Eco Cops and the environmental air force. This 302 page book is a natural for ecology-minded youngsters as well as middle graders who are wowed by weirdness. Ages 8-12. Very-y-y-y interesting.!
