      1 Spirit Walker: Poems
      Wood, Nancy
1993 56076 The courage, determination, and powerful spiritual faith of native Americans are celebrated in this remarkable collection. Nancy Wood's eloquent poems reveal the unique wisdom and vision of a people who have been her friends and teachers for more than thirty years.frank Howell's magnificent paintings evoke the beauty and vitality of their ancient culture. Poetry and paintings together creata a haunting portrait of a proud and enduring people whose great love and respect for the earth are valuable examples for us all. Publishers Weekly A companion piece to Many Winters, this uneven collection contains Wood's impressions of the ``deep spirituality'' of Taos Pueblo Indians whom she has known for more than 30 years. ``We are all Spirit Brothers,'' declares Wood, ``The Woman. The Man. / The Buffalo. The Tree. The River. / Each is part of another. / Each is part of the same.'' Howell's paintings--expressive Native American Indian faces with stylized wisps of white hair, set against fields of intense color; or quietly powerful landscapes--are individually striking but repetitious. An introduction outlines Taos culture and religious convictions, but the poems themselves concentrate on Wood's personal beliefs about her connection to ``something largely undefinable, call it God or the Great Spirit, Buddha or Allah. Krishna or Mozart.'' The poet's voice, while authoritative, is an odd combination of sage wisdom, Eastern aphorisms and New Age mysticism. Her messages about the ``harmony'' of the universe, the ``interconnectedness'' of people to the earth, and the need to protect the environment will attract many readers. Ages 12-up . (Oct.) School Library Journal Gr 6 Up-The mystical connection between humanity and nature is explored in this stunning book of poetry and art. Wood draws on her close association with Taos Pueblo natives, and on her own life at the edge of the New Mexican wilderness, to create short distillations of tribal and personal insight. At times, she takes on the voice of Native Americans, which in less informed hands could be problematic. The author acknowledges her Judeo-Christian roots and successfully bridges the two cultures, giving readers insight into Native American spiritual experience. Her themes are the interconnectedness of all living things, the rich inner life earned through solitude, and a deep reverence for ``the Great Spirit who infuses everything with life and meaning.'' Her voice is direct, as in the poem that begins: ``My help is in the mountain/where I take myself to heal/the earthly wounds/ that people give to me.'' The 44 poems are accompanied by paintings of adult Native Americans. These detailed portraits, set in symbolic compositions, are themselves meditations on the beauty of wisdom, age, and stillness. Because the poems focus on universal values, they are well suited for public presentations. This beautiful volume provides serenity, contemplation, and spiritual richness, experiences that are all too rare in this clamorous age.-Carolyn Polese, Humboldt State Univ., Arcata, CA Synopsis The courage, determination, and powerful spiritual faith of native Americans are celebrated in this remarkable collection.
