COMING HOME: A THOUGHTFUL RESOURCE FOR FATHERS, MOTHERS, AND THE REBIRTH OF THE FAMILY. Shenk, Sara Wenger 1992 5437 ABOUT THE BOOK Coming Home: A Thoughtful Resource for Fathers, Mothers, and the Rebirth of the Family. SYNOPSIS From the Backcover Coming Home is about commitment to each other. It is about preserving the center of what sustains us as human beings. That center is life together, according to author Sara Wenger Shenk: --"The yearning to come home, to be cherished for who we are, is one of the most universal and profound longings experienced by humankind." -- "When our best energies are spent elsewhere, the creative core of human life is consumed, as if by fire. If we hope to restore life together, its character has to be radically reconceived." -- "Parenting, at least for most of us, requires a commitment to downward mobility." -- "If we care for our children as Jesus would, it becomes a profound, life-changing discipline of the spirit." -- Home has become an afterthought, relegated to the fringes of our busy days." -- "Full equity for women and strong, thriving families are not incompatible." -- "It is humbling to have children. I am reminded every day that my life is out of control." -- "Fathers and male adult models in touch with their own humanity can usher in a new generation of sons: sons who are secure in their male self-identity, sons who no longer need to do heroics to be worthy, sons who can act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God." -- "We can do things sort of willy-nilly, drifting unreflectively through traditions that come from here and there and everywhere, or we can start early as a family to shape a life together that reflects who we are, where we've come from, and where we want to go." Sara and Gerald have two sons and a daughter. The sometimes traumatic years of adjusting to motherhood gave rise to her first book, And Then There Were Three: An Ode to Parenthood./ Further reflection on the spirit of life at home gave rise to her second book, Why Not Celebrate! Sara has a masters degree in Theological Studies from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois. She currently lives in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where Gerald teaches at Easter Mennonite Seminary. She serves as pastor of Immanuel Mennonite Church and frequently provides resource to weekend retreats. Good Books 1-56148-060-6 / 9781561480609 Paperback As New Intercourse, PA Price:
