The selections are mostly traditional. Authors include Saints Patrick, Benedict, Ignatius Loyola, and Francis of Assisi, as well as Albert Schweitzer and Jane Austen. The paintings, dating from the 9th through the 19th centuries and including works by Raphael, Poussin, Botticelli, Titian, and Vermeer, have been well chosen to form an evocative setting for the text. They are arranged in a pleasing variety of sizes, from double-page spreads to vignettes. The volume is small and easy to handle, as befits a prayerbook, with adequate color reproduction, but some clarity is sacrificed when the paintings are so reduced in size.
