1988 1328 ABOUT THE BOOK Nicky the Nature Detective ANNOTATION Nicky's adventures in the woods and fields introduce the reader to the seasonal changes in plants and animals. FROM THE CRITICS School Library Journal Gr 3-5 An attractive book with all the hallmarks of a shelf-sitter, this interesting ecology observation book was originally published in Sweden. A little girl does various nature observations and experiments through the seasons in the vicinity of a maple tree; for each season, changes in the trees and plants and bird, mammal, and insect life are described in words and handsome watercolors. Changes have obviously been made for a North American audience, but they have not been done carefully: the American word blueberry is used in the text, but the picture is captioned bilberry ; the illustration of a robin is the smaller European bird, and in the ``Spring" chapter half a page is devoted to the cuckoo's nesting habits.
