FAY'S FAIRY TALES: CINDERELLA Wegman, William 1993 8061 In her haste to flee the palace before her fairy godmother's magic loses effect, Cinderella leaves behind a glass slipper. Photographs show the characters depicted as dogs (Weimaraners). FROM THE PUBLISHER: William Wegman, known throughout the world for his startling and revealing photographs of his weimaraners, presents the classic ashes-to-riches tale as it has never before been conceived. With Battina as the lovely, uncomplaining Ella, and Fay as the evil stepmother, the story unfolds in true fairy-tale fashion. FROM THE CRITICS Publishers Weekly: With his signature humorous, surreal photographs of weimaraners, the creator of Man's Best Friend glibly retells a much-loved story. Wegman poses his canine models in minimal sets; the dogs' heads pop out of kitschy gowns and campy wigs, while human hands rather than paws project from the clothing. (In one scene a character extends a human foot with garish red toenails to try on the glass slipper.) The unkind stepmother, wearing a disheveled black wig, intimidates readers with a cold gaze; more winsome are Cinderella, exhibiting a shy dignity, and the prince, who wears a beseeching expression. Wegman even finds six liver-colored puppies to act as ``coach horses'' for Cinderella's carriage. Attached to such arresting images, a lengthy--and only intermittently witty--text seems almost an afterthought, and may well be over children's heads. Audiences have grown accustomed to cartoons featuring animals with human bodies, but this spooky parade of stiff characters treads a delicate line between the comic and the grotesque. While some readers will find it prepossessingly silly, others may feel unsettled or alarmed. All ages. Children's Literature - Mary Sue Preissner Recently it seems that our most loved fairy tales have experienced a rebirth, from original tales with stunning illustrations, to a retelling from the perspectives of the other characters involved. In Wegman's books, he holds true to the basic tales we all remember from our childhood, with a little sugar coating added to the endings. His tales however, command your attention because of his remarkable photographs. Most of them are full-page color, with detailed backgrounds. Wegman uses a special photographic technique involving 20 x 24 inch Polaroids. The surprise for readers is his use of dogs, Wegman's weimaraners to portray the characters in the stories. While the text is for the more advanced reader, it's never too early for children to expand their vocabularies. Hyperion 1562823485 / 9781562823481 Hardcover As New New York Price:

MAN'S BEST FRIEND Wegman, William 1999 176544 William Wegman is widely respected for his photographs of the majestic Weimaraner dog. One of his first models (and longtime companion) was a pooch named Man Ray, who passed away in 1982. This beautiful dog also plays a starring role in Man's Best Friend, where he is caught posing, napping, and playing in more than 40 (mainly color) photographs. Wegman dresses his dog in a variety of costumes--transforming him into a strange new creature--half man, half canine. Each exquisite portrait is a testament to Man Ray's beauty--and the strong bond between dog and master. This handsome book is one you'll admire time and time again. MY TOWN Wegman, William 1998 40327 William Wegman and his cast of canines are back, and this time Chip is in a bit of a bind. His school report is due and he hasn't got a clue as to what he might want to report on--all he wants to do is take pictures! But write a report he must, so Chip heads downtown in search of a topic. He consults a host of characters--and snaps their photos, too--including fire chief Chundo, construction foreman Culvert, Barry the beautician, and police officer Badgerino, who tells Chip that "ideas come from everywhere. There is no one way. Look in all directions." Chip takes Badgerino's valuable advice and decides that a photo essay is a great idea. After all, a "picture is worth a thousand words!" Wegman does it again with imaginative settings, colorful text, and those delightful Weimaraners. From School Library Journal: PreSchool-Grade 4-Wegman fans rejoice-the wily weimaraners are suited up again. No period costumes [as in Cinderella (1993) or Little Red Riding Hood (1993)] or canine body draping this time [as in ABC (1994) or 123 (1995, all Hyperion)]; the dog heads appear above attire appropriate to all those folks in town. Chip has to write a report but all he wants to do is take photographs. A bus driver, teacher, librarian, coach, artist, police officer, mail carrier, firefighter, mechanic, and others try to help. The dog isn't inspired by any of their suggestions but he takes their pictures with his camera. Finally, inspiration dawns. The pup realizes he doesn't have to write the report-he can produce a photo-documentary. Just like his character, the author realizes he doesn't have to create great literatureto frame this work. A simple straightforward text with a blush of wit supports the illustrations without distraction. The full-color photographs are ingenious and the infinitely patient canines shine once again in this tribute to the people who make up a small town. A surefire hit for units on community helpers and Wegman devotees. Hyperion Books for Children 0-7868-0410-6 / 9780786804108 Hardcover As New Condition New York Price:

WILLIAM WEGMAN'S FARM DAYS Wegman, William 1997 40989 From School Library Journal Kindergarten-Grade 2. If you have young patrons (and/or their parents) who have enjoyed Wegman's Cinderella (1993) and William Wegman's Mother Goose (1996, both Hyperion), you will have an audience for this spin-off of the old tale of the country mouse and the city mouse. For those not familiar with Mr. W's productions, the photo illustrations star his patient, photogenic weimaraners, posed wearing human clothes and rather eerily depicted with human hands?and feet?where necessary. In this tale of a lesson learned, city boy/dog Chip visits his friends on Farmer McFay's farm and is inveigled into doing all the work. While Chip doggedly digs and plants and cleans cow stalls and mows and acts as a scarecrow, his pals dawdle, sip milk, fish, and generally loll about. A wiser Chip packs up and heads cityward to star as a drummer in a nightclub combo. Several illustrations might give young non-farmers the mistaken impression that a varied crop of veggies can be reaped from four spindly plants (tomatoes?), that hay is mowed with a hand-pushed lawn mower, and that scarecrows are needed in long-harvested cornfields. Very peculiar.?Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc. Card catalog description Chip, a city dog, goes to visit his country cousins to learn all about farming.
