Gospel Barnhardt, Wilton 1993 9598 The search is on for a lost first-century gospel of the Bible, a document that could shake the foundations of Christianity. The narrative races through dozens of locales as a theologian and an ex-priest pursue rumors and clues about the gospel. In the end, what they discover will challenge and forever change the nature of faith. FROM THE PUBLISHER Prediction: In this decade there will be no more daring, rich, learned, hilarious, profound, adventurous novel than Wilton Barnhardt's Gospel. It is the story of a quest: of an eccentric, hard-living old Chicago-Irish professor, O'Hanrahan, and an attractive, eager young student, Lucy Dantan, as they careen and comb through Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and America in search of a lost biblical gospel and their own souls. Fueled by O'Hanrahan's determination and Lucy's youth and impetuousness, they ignite a tumultuous chase that has two thousand years of history boiling in its wake. FROM THE CRITICS Publishers Weekly Barnhardt's massive, erudite novel turns on a transcontinental search for a lost, biblical Gospel. (Mar.) BookList - Ilene Cooper "Big" is the only word to describe Barhhardt's saga of the search for a lost gospel. It's long (almost 800 pages); it's loaded with characters, religious facts, and biblical lore; and it moves across 17 locales and in and out of the first and twentieth centuries. Does the book's weight (literal and otherwise) bog down the story? Yes, sometimes, but Barnhardt has some very big metaphysical points to make, and readers willing to persevere to the fascinating conclusion will see how every thread of this multifaceted story is necessary to complete the tapestry. A bare bones plot summary: for the last 40 years, Patrick O'Hanrahan, a disgraced University of Chicago professor, has been trying to find a "lost gospel," ostensibly written by the disciple Matthais. On this particular leg of the chase, O'Hanrahan seems to have disappeared, so the university sends a graduate student, Lucy Dantan, to find him. (A plot element that never really rings true.) Unsurprisingly, Lucy is unable to haul the old warhorse home but, instead, gets involved in the search for the manuscript herself. Interspersed with the present-day adventure are chapters from the Gospel of Matthais, a disciple in search of his own soul. To summarize this book's plot, though, is to miss its essence, which can be found in Barnhardt fascinating commentary--acerbic, funny, insightful musings (sometimes in the voice of God) on religion's radiance and wrath, the death-grip that it has on us, and the distinctions all people must make between Faith and Truth. Colleen McCullough "A splendid novel on all counts." -- The New York Times Book Review Alan Cheuse "Barnhardt has got such great imagination and wit, and eridition enough to recreate the gospel itself in these pages, that this is the kind of book...you want to linger with and relish." -- National Public Radio. WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING "Barnhardt eridition is astonishing, yet it's totally accessable. If you loved Byatt's Possession, Palliser's The Quincunx, where echoes the name of the rose, and here is the big, addictive epic you've been waiting for." - Diane Wakoski St. Martin's Press 0-312-08802-7 / 9780312088026 Hardcover As New As New Book Jacket New York Price:
