Completely revised and updated for the 21st century.
School Library Journal Gr 6 Up: Post and Coles treat etiquette questions, including how to eat artichokes and chicken nuggets, when girls can call boys, how to break up with a steady friend, and how to handle ``call waiting'' in a thorough manner. Although the use of witticisms to replace actual names is traditional in Post's books, ``Justin Jock,'' ``Muffy Spensamore,'' and ``Sam Spaced'' are not welcome updates. Still, there are some excellent chapters. Particularly important is advice for latchkey children involving safety at home. Sex is treated conservatively, and absolute prohibitions are levied on drugs and alcohol. Methods for obtaining help for family problems are discussed. Employment etiquette covers resumes and interview situations. More detailed than Carlson and Fitzgibbon's Manners That Matter (Dutton, 1983), it is also somewhat formal and assumes that readers will be going to restaurants, the theater, and other fairly expensive places. A thumb-index guides readers to the major categories of social interaction. Every aspect has been reviewed for this edition, and new coverage includes electronic mail as well as sexual harassment in the workplace.
