ABOUT THE BOOK 101 Lies Men Tell Women, and Why Women Believe Them FROM THE PUBLISHER I'll call you.... I love you.... I'm getting a divorce.... No, I don't think your thighs are too big.... Lies, every one of them. How can you tell when a man is lying? What do they tend to lie about? Why do they lie in the first place? These are the questions Dr. Hollander answers in this insightful exploration of the communication and perception differences between men and women. A veritable self-defense manual against the half-truths and outright fabrications men sometimes make, 101 Lies Men Tell Women draws on dozens of interviews with both sexes to reveal how men use lies as a means of both attracting and distancing themselves from the women in their lives. It is an invaluable guide to understanding the dynamics of deception, and the lessons it contains can empower any woman to take the reins of her relationship and lead it back to the path of honesty and true intimacy. Author Biography: Dory Hollander is a licensed psychologist and the president of New Options, Inc., a consulting firm. She frequently conducts seminars on gender-related issues and divides her time between St. Louis, MO, and Arlington, VA. FROM THE CRITICS USA Weekend This book is really about being lied to, whatever the sex. Publishers Weekly Psychologist Hollander (The Doom Loop System) bases her pop-psych study on interviews with 60 women and 35 men across the country. She classifies lies as hooks (especially in flirting), as masks and as evasions, the latter often used to promote a false sense of harmony, to avoid confrontation or to prevent hurt feelings. Women believe lies, she argues, because they want to believe them. Hollander does not address nonverbal areas until her concluding section, which lists physical clues that may accompany lying. But as presented here the gender differences in relying on the power of the spoken word seem almost insurmountable: when a man says, ``I'll call you" or whispers, ``I love you" on the first date, any woman who takes such avowals literally deserves what she gets, males would likely agree.
